Young talent Tyrell Hampton has been chosen as the winner of a new prize for outstanding United States-based fashion photographers under age 30: the first-ever Bal Harbour Shops Emerging Fashion Photography Award. Hampton’s dynamic eye for portraiture captured the jury, a group of leading editors and photographers including Alessia Glaviano of Vogue Italia, Michael Famighetti of Aperture and photographers Diana Markosian and Gillian Laub, who worked closely with Bal Harbour Shops and Cultured magazine editor-in-chief Sarah Harrelson on his selection. Having lensed campaigns for brands such as Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Coach, and shot fashion editorials for a myriad of publications, the up-and-coming creative is one to watch.

On his Instagram account and website, the fashion photographer shares an abundance of alluring nightlife shots, which offer dynamic, sometimes provocative, peeks into the lives of today’s biggest celebrities and influencers. Hampton’s background in dance is apparent in his work as well, as his photographic art incorporates a liveliness and movement.

“The energy and emotion in Tyrell’s images instantly captivated all of us. We are all very excited to honor him,” writes Harrelson in a statement. As the inaugural awardee, the fashion photographer will receive a $5,000 grant as continued support for his work. On November 19, Hampton will be showing his first solo exhibition, “Go Home,” at New York’s SN37 Gallery. On display will be a variety of the photographer’s black and white images showcasing New York nightlife from 2016 to present, an ode to his own coming of age there. Hampton has elected to donate all proceeds from the show to the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation. Bal Harbour Shops and Cultured will celebrate Hampton’s successes during Art Basel Miami this December.

“In Bal Harbour Shops’ 56-year history we have championed both fashion photography and fashion illustration as part of our core DNA,” says the Shops’ Carolyn Travis. Since 2020, Bal Harbour Shops has honored a fashion illustrator with its annual Creative Challenge prize. This new accolade follows the tradition to lift up deserving young professionals. “With that in mind,” she continues, “The Bal Harbour Shops Emerging Fashion Photography Award was created to honor and support the best new creative talent.”
