Aubrey Mayer met Elizabeth Peyton at 19 years old in Orient, New York. He traded sailing lessons off the North Fork in exchange for a portrait sitting. Peyton then introduced Mayer to White Columns curator Matthew Higgs and the rest is history. Mayer became the de facto town historian for artists that made their way to the Long Island Sound each summer.
