CULTURED Editor-in-Chief Sarah Harrelson with Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Malcolm Washington at Chateau Marmont.

In honor of CULTURED’s inaugural Artists on Artists issue, Editor-in-Chief Sarah Harrelson invited friends of the magazine to celebrate with an evening of music, martinis, and a candlelit dinner at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.

Upon arriving at the legendary Hollywood haunt, guests made their way to the historic lobby for a festive cocktail. There, attendees—including actors and recent cover stars Rachel Sennott and LaKeith Stanfield; actors John David Washington and Lionel Boyce; and CULTURED's Arts Editor-at-Large Sophia Cohen—sank into the Chateau's deep couches and pored over the pages of the latest issue.

After a few rounds of martinis, the group made its way to one of Chateau Marmont's iconic bungalows for a candlelit dinner, commencing with heartfelt speeches. Reflecting on CULTURED’s origin story, Sarah Harrelson addressed the table by describing her mission and the magazine’s success in fostering a sense of lasting community in the art world. “I have always revered creativity,” said Harrelson, “and creating meaningful conversations between artists is what we are celebrating here tonight."

In the issue's pages, Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby and filmmaker Malcolm Washington––who made his directorial debut with his film The Piano Lesson in partnership with Netflix––discussed what it takes to make a work of art that stops you in your tracks. Last night, the pair's creative synergy also sparked a lasting sense of community.
