On Saturday, the Corita Art Center in downtown Los Angeles carried on the legacy of Corita Kent (1918–1986), the screen-printing nun whose artwork bridged the gap between radical social movements and Catholic tradition. Its inaugural benefit drew artists, entertainers, and art-world tastemakers to the Marciano Art Foundation.
The Locale: With concrete façades, soaring ceilings, and stained glass windows, the space provided a fitting backdrop for an evening celebrating Corita’s vision of fusing creativity and piety. Guests mingled while taking in a new exhibition celebrating her art, on view through January 24.
The Crowd: The event’s high-powered guest list included actors Melissa McCarthy and Kathryn Hahn; artists Barbara Kruger, Catherine Opie, Mary Weatherford, Laura Owens, Andrea Bowers, Patrick Martinez, and Joey Terrill; patrons Anton and Jennifer Segerstrom; chef Suzanne Goin, architect Barbara Bestor; designer Pamela Shamshiri, and writer and producer Maria Bell.
The Entertainment: The evening was emceed by McCarthy and her actor/director husband Ben Falcone. Musician Natalie Bergman gave the audience a taste of the gospel-tinged folk pop from her new record, My Home Is Not in This World.
Food and Drink: A family-style dinner from chef Annie Campbell featured a technicolor spread reminiscent of Sister Mary Corita’s vibrant palette.
Parting Gift: Guests left with Corita Art Center’s ‘GIVE A DAMN’ tote—a goodie bag that included the latest issue of CULTURED—a nightcap for an evening rich with artistic celebration.
