Conceived and programmed by Ian Schrager, the visionary entrepreneur and hotelier who brought us Studio 54, and executed and interpreted by the Statuto Group, the property is EDITION’s first in Italy, marking an exciting new chapter in the luxury brand’s expansion.
Built in the 1940s and formerly occupied by a bank, the building stands a mere lira’s throw from Via Veneto, the street immortalized by Fellini’s legendary film. Picture Marcello Mastroianni, in a dark suit and sunglasses, drinking, smoking, and looking fabulous as he ambles past buzzy nighttime cafes and picks up a straggling Nico.
Inside the hotel’s lobby, dramatic 22-foot high ceilings and white-fabric sofas welcome weary travelers and locals alike. Play pool on a custom-made table or linger at one of the two ground-floor bars—the speakeasy-inspired Punch Room, and the Jade Room, an intimate mixology destination—as you practice your Italian and order tanti aperitivi (un negroni, per favore).
The 93 guest rooms, including 17 suites and two penthouse suites, exhibit an unmistakable Italian flare. Custom-designed beds made of Canaletto light walnut wood stand next to peperino stone bedside tables and beige leather-upholstered chairs. In the bathroom, Carrara marble basins, brushed brass features, and EDITION’s signature Le Labo products await visitors.
Upstairs, the rooftop offers views of some of Rome’s best-known landmarks, including the Pantheon, the Acqua Paola Fountain, and the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle. A large bar area serving cocktails spruced with regional citrus notes and dishes inspired by the Italian-Mediterranean coast is the perfect way to end a day of sightseeing and shopping, as is a dip in the elegant travertine plunge pool.
The crowning jewel of the hotel, however, is Anima, a ground-floor restaurant featuring a private garden, an all-day menu of light bites, and dinner delicacies. With a cascade of jasmine climbing over the façade and Italianate lanterns decorating the space, the restaurant feels almost out of time; it is here one might imagine meeting Mastroianni’s character for real, his sunglasses intact, his swagger still outstanding.
