The Hamptons has a long legacy of being the home to creatives. Artists such as Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner made their world-renowned work in East Hampton and were laid to rest there as well. Today, contemporary artists in a variety of media follow in these legends’ footsteps, finding inspiration in the Hamptons’ proximity to New York City but living and working in studios that favor ocean air salt spray over the daily hustle and bustle. For the weekend commencing Friday, August 13 and wrapping up on Sunday, August 15, Cultured is hosting an exclusive experience that will bring Cultured VIP members directly to the studios of some of the most exciting creatives in the Hamptons today. Cultured VIP is an immersive content experience that includes a one-year subscription to Cultured magazine, exclusive Cultured merch, passes to art and design fairs in select cities and invitations to events all over the United States. For this art-filled members-only weekend, we will visit three female artists who have been living and working out East for over 30 years. Each with an individual practice, they bring their vision to New York in dialogue with artists of the past but uniquely their own. Alice Hope, Toni Ross and Bastienne Schmidt initially crossed paths years ago and have since not only deepened their friendship, but also formed the collective No W Here in 2020, responding to a larger sense of collective isolation by safely coming together with the intention of making work meant to be shown in a group dynamic. While also working independently, they are communicating with a historical dialogue that extends through decades of artists coming together to make engaging work, reflective of their time. The three artists spend their time year-round in the Hamptons, in relative quietude during the winter months. This past year, while many of the streets of Manhattan vacated due to the pandemic, those out East were fortunate that much of the art in New York City came to them. Prestigious galleries found new homes closer to collectors, and while artists were still isolated in their studios, new bodies of work were made prolifically. Our VIP tour will provide exclusive access to some of this work, not yet shown in public.
